Vox stated that Brandon had looked “limp” (Coolidge, March 2004) and that
Christina was yelling, “Lord Jesus, Lord Jesus” amongst other things. She then

found her unable to face the charges due to her mental health. Her attorney, Scott
Croswell, stated that she continued to be “delusional” and that she suffered from
“a significant diagnosable mental illness”. (Coolidge, March 2004) Brandon was
discovered to have bruises on his back and a torn cheek and upper lip. These
injuries were indicative of being suffocated.
Christina was later charged with involuntary manslaughter and deemed
competent to stand trial. Dr. Adelaida Fernandez, Christina’s psychiatrist, stated
that she suffered from depression and bipolar disorder. She described bipolar
disorder as something that could cause periods of mood swings, characterized by
“racing thoughts, poor judgment and incredible energy” as well as “psychotic
delusions and exaggerated religious thoughts”. (Coolidge, September 2004)
Prosecutors argued that Christina had killed Brandon in a religious ceremony,
